Study 12: “The association of complementary and alternative medicine use and health care expenditures for back and neck problems” Martin et al
Using Medical Expenditure Panel survey data, this study evaluated the healthcare costs of patients with back and neck problems that sought complementary and alternative medicine compared to those that did not. Approximately 35.8% of the included 12,036 patients with back and neck problems used complementary and alternative medicine. This study found that there was no difference between patients that sought complementary and alternative medicine compared to those that did not. The key takeaway from this study is that contrary to some popular belief, people that receive complementary and alternative medicine for their back and neck pain do not use more healthcare than those that do not use complementary and alternative medicine.
